2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive a key figure informed team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the requirement for a clearer direction.
The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete content from the president's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was enlightening. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to consideration and revamped the title with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to achieve its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following some time of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half creating and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving him next week. We are all excited to persist observing the progress of the game in the weeks to ahead.
The President
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, stakes, and challenges that change every match. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Or aim high, risk it all, and trust your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
The game does not have an announced release date or supported systems, but fans can anticipate more updates as development continues.
