Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
